The impact of social media in #fees must fall campaign.
The smart move through marketing and advertising the #fees must fall campaign.

The #Fees must fall campaign is a protest motion led by students of
higher education in response to an increase of fees in South African
universities. The protest started on the 15 of October 2015, led by the
students of the University of Witwatersrand spreading their grievance to other
universities such as University of Johannesburg, University of Cape Town, Tshwane
University of technology, University of Kwa Zulu Natal and others. This spread
of information was achieved through the use of social media such as twitter,
Facebook, you-tube as their communication tool.
Social media influence was massive in driving the message throughout the
whole nation although its somehow misinterpreted the core concept around the
whole campaign, but other than that it has been an excellence strategy of
marketing and advertising the whole campaign across the nation without spending
millions of rends for publicity unlike the professional organisations with
qualified and highly skilled marketers who would have run to media for coverage
and publicity.
They used social media as their tool for marketing
the whole campaign persuasively with posting their options on
Facebook and recording videos to post on you tube and vans websites. This
disabled media people to change the whole core concepts into their
own perspective because students were able to step ahead of them
through the usage of social media where people can listen read and view the
real reasons for the organizing and protesting of the strike.
Although social media played it role in spreading the awareness and
grabbing media attention about the campaign students were also able to
go offline and into the streets. political parties have been formed
in motive of helping student of all south African students to fight this
battle, this brought some change and hope in most students who have partake in
this campaign. The young people of South Africa are asking how they can get
themselves out of poverty if they cannot afford the required tool to combat poverty
with, namely education?
The impact of the usage of social media was a success in terms that the
spread was not only through social media but it was also heard in radio and
seen in television by all South African citizens. This is how you
build a brand. Advertising people and marketing specialist should learn one on
two strategies in this campaign, social media is the new route where you can
have a massive publicity without spending millions and billions or rends for
publicity.
The way this campaign was a success it feared the whole government which
resulted them into responding to the demands of the students as soon as
possible. For more information follow the live below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mycP5rlbZ4

ReplyDeleteThe campaign was not only about transforming the institutions of higher learning but also the larger society. Indeed, this was clearly a demonstration that education and social issues are intertwined.History was made and that has given a lot of young people a future to look forward to.Thanks Nkuli for a great post.
ReplyDeleteFees must fall indeed, I mean the there is a great deal of inequality among students and most of that cant afford paying for their tertiary education especially the black ones, and it kind of make the system bias because in a manner it black student are automatically eliminated or put aside because of their financial backgrounds.
ReplyDeletei feel that most news broadcasts failed students in their failure to report adequately on the enormity of the movement, but for the most part the end goal was reached the increment of fees fell. thanks to social media . history was indeed made by South African students who took it to their account and do what they believe was right not for them only but the future generation of this country.
